Sivu: 1Sivu: 2letter FroM tHe ManaGeMent teaM R esponsibility in the operations of energy sector companies attracts major attention these days. society calls for solutions from energysector players to cut down carbon dioxide emissions and increase the share of renewable energies. Finland has also set the national objective to increase the share of indigenous sources of energy. responsible players are also required to supply energy reliably and safely. Well-functioning infrastructure − in Gasum’s case the natural gas pipeline network and its control equipment − is the foundation of reliable energy supply. the transmission network must be kept in good working order. it must also be ensured that any new network sections needed are designed and implemented with consideration for environmental perspectives and society’s other needs and wishes. other units such as gas vehicle filling stations or future biogas production facilities must also operate reliably and safely. Gasum’s customers expect us to provide competitive and sustainable services and solutions. We have cooperated with consulting company pöyry to formulate our emissions vision that aims for an 80% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions at sites using natural gas by 2050. to achieve this objective we will launch new technologies, the most important of which include biogas production using anaerobic digestion, production of wood-based biogas (bio-snG, synthetic biogas) through gasification, and carbon capture and storage (CCs) at power plants that use gas. Gasum’s owners, one of which is the Finnish state, place requirements on the development of the company’s business. as regards personnel, Gasum wishes to be a good and reliable employer offering opportunities for development. as a natural gas importer and leading player in the Finnish gas sector, Gasum is also expected to carry out general interest representation in the gas sector and develop the gas market and new technologies related to gas. the introduction of bio-based energy gases to Gasum’s product range is an important step forward. For the first time in Finland biogas will be injected into Gasum’s network in autumn 2011 in Kouvola. We have decided to call the combination of natural gas and gas produced from various biobased raw materials ’natural energy gas’. When preparing this first Corporate responsibility report, we conducted a survey to find out which aspects of responsibility in Gasum’s operations were regarded as the most important by our stakeholders. in addition to security of supply, the environment and safety and the current and future uses of gas covered above, a fourth major theme that emerged in the responses was openness. our Corporate responsibility report is one way for us to provide information about our operations and development objectives and therefore increase openness. Gasum has made a commitment to a responsible approach and continuous operational improvement. This enables us to implement our promise in a sustainable manner: Natural energy gases for a cleaner tomorrow.
