We supply natural gas and biogas efficiently and develop the energy market in Finland. In 2010 Gasum sold a total of 44.6 TWh of natural gas − covering 10% of Finland’s total demand for energy. Natural gas is a clean and versatile fuel. Its uses include energy production, industry, transport and households. OUR STRATEGY Gasum’s strategic objective is to preserve a major role for natural gas in Finland’s energy balance. At the same time we seek to develop into a leading supplier of renewable domestic biogas and diversify the use of gases in applications such as industry and road and sea transport. An important role in the implementation of our strategy is played by the gas transmission network, with a considerable part of our investments targeted at its maintenance and development. The underground pipeline network enables the transmission of large amounts of energy out of sight, safely and efficiently. To reach our objectives, in recent years we have expanded our operations into new business areas and invested in research and product development work. We are also changing our company structure to better reflect our new activities. AIMS FOR THE FUTURE Gasum is developing biogas production in cooperation with its partners. Our aim is to utilise the gas transmission network in the logistics required for upgraded biogas and bio-synthetic natural gas (bio-SNG). The combined potential for bio-based gases in Finland is at least 15 TWh, which is around a third of current natural gas consumption. Once liquefied (LNG), natural and biogas can also be transported to new users outside our gas pipeline network. Another aim for the future is to ship in LNG to meet the needs of the growing shipping market.Together with gas operators in the Baltic States, we are also exploring opportunities to import LNG to serve the energy market more extensively.The LNG study is part of the Baltic Energy Market Interconnection Plan (BEMIP) initiative, which is one of the priority energy infrastructure projects of the European Union. Gasum participates in the development of technologies that help cut down emissions from the use of natural gas. We provide funding related to carbon capture and storage (CCS) through channels including Cleen Ltd and the Gasum Natural Gas Fund. We are also exploring opportunities to utilise hydrogen as a transport fuel. 4 ANNUAL REPORT 2010
