The specific emission of carbon dioxide from natural gas combustion is 55.0 gCO2/MJ, while the figures for other fuels such as coal or peat are 94.6 gCO2/MJ and 105.9 gCO2/MJ, respectively. (Statistics Finland, Fuel Classification 2011). OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY AT GASUM We maintain and actively develop our own safety management system. The system is regularly inspected during internal and external audits. Gasum has been involved in the Zero Accident Forum of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health since 2005. The Gasum Group’s safety policy was renewed and published for the entire staff in autumn 2010. Our safety policy covers issues such as compliance with safety instructions and safe working methods, maintenance and development of a safety management system, identification of and consideration for work-related risks, personnel training and encouragement towards safe working methods. In addition, we require that our partners maintain corresponding safety levels. Every new Gasum employee receives occupational health and safety training as appropriate for their duties. This also applies to short-term employees such as summer trainees. In 2010 we organised training related to rescue services at 13 sessions for our employees and 49 sessions for Rescue Service Regions in Southern Finland, while the number of sessions organised for contractors totalled 56. In 2010 the Gasum Group sick leave rate due to ill health and accidents was 2.6% of total annual working hours. The corresponding rate among member enterprises of the Confederation of Finnish Industries EK averaged 4.4% in 2009. Gasum employees had nine accidents at work that resulted in at least one day off work. There were two serious accidents connected to Gasum’s operations in 2010. In April an accident took place at the NGV filling station in Malmi, Helsinki, where two employees of a contractor were seriously injured during maintenance work. The incident was investigated by the Safety Technology Authority (Tukes) and an accident inquiry report was published. In November an accident took place at Gasum’s natural gas pipeline construction site in Mäntsälä that resulted in the death of an employee of the pipeline construction contractor. Investigations into the accident continued over the turn of the year. EXERCISES TO PREPARE FOR MAJOR ACCIDENTS Gasum conducts exercises to prepare for major accidents every year. These have been organised in Kouvola in 2008, Imatra in 2009 and Mäntsälä in 2010. The Mäntsälä exercise focused on leadership, securing of the continuity of gas supply, and communications. GAS LEAKS AND OTHER EXCEPTIONAL SITUATIONS IN 2010 There were no gas leaks or other accident or exceptional situations in Gasum’s transmission network in 2010. A total of six gas leaks were registered in local natural gas distribution networks operated by Gasum during the year under review. The most common reason behind these was pipe damage caused by a contractor. Once alerted, Gasum’s on-call staff arrived quickly at leak sites and managed to eliminate the leaks on average within two hours. The leaks did not result in considerable supply disruptions for users. In one case of leak gas caught fire. This took place in Sturenkatu, Helsinki, on 6 May 2010. Gas that had leaked into underground canals caught fire and manhole covers were blown off by the pressure in a busy street. The incident did not, however, cause any injuries. In addition to gas leaks, one other exceptional situation occurred in 2010. Storage water heaters supplied by Gasum caused a deviation in hot water quality in the Sundsberg residential area of Kirkkonummi. The defective heaters were replaced by Gasum, and water samples taken towards the end of the year no longer contained any quality deviations. According to local environmental health care authorities, no health hazard was caused by the situation.
