If necessary, the Gasum Fixed product can be used to agree upon the entire energy charge in advance. The year 2010 turned out a record year in terms of hedging sales, too, with products sold for 5.4 TWh or 12% of total natural gas sales. Customers satisfied with supply reliability According to a customer survey conducted by Corporate Image in March-April, Gasum has managed to clearly improve customer satisfaction levels, with customers particularly pleased with good and increasingly active service provision. All in all the results improved in almost every aspect, with customer orientation, service-mindedness, active maintenance of contacts and openness of communications among fields that had improved clearly from the previous survey conducted in 2008. A total of 109 energy trade customers were interviewed for the survey during March and April. development outlooks Gasum’s customer survey revealed that significantly fewer Gasum customers anticipated any increases in their natural gas consumption in their estimates of future developments in natural gas usage. Many of those anticipating a decrease in natural gas consumption gave the increased total price of natural gas as the reason for this. Tax increases in particular were regarded as factors that will steer customers towards the use of biofuels. Sales of natural gas in 2011 are expected to remain at least at the level seen in 2010. If adopted, Finland’s new energy taxation, which is to be introduced in steps, will considerably reduce the competitiveness of natural gas by 2015 at the latest, while the impacts of the 2013 reform of the emissions trading scheme on natural gas competitiveness are still difficult to estimate. A major increase in natural gas usage is anticipated for the international energy market. Replacing coal with natural gas has been found to be the quickest way to cut down carbon dioxide emissions and consequently slow down climate change in both the USA and the European Union. Estimates of the amount of natural gas available have almost tripled since the launch of unconventional sources of natural gas. In Finland major increases in the use of bio-based solid fuels in particular have been seen as a solution for emission cuts, but this may prove challenging in practice. Restricting factors include access to fuel and logistics in densely populated urban areas with high traffic volumes. The advantages of pipeline logistics and the efficiency of combined production will speak in favour of natural gas usage in future too. New technologies such as bio-synthetic natural gas and carbon dioxide capture will enable even further cuts in emissions from natural gas use. the Gas eXChanGe Gasum’s subsidiary Gas Exchange Ltd maintains an online marketplace for natural gas secondary market trading and CO2 emissions allowance trading and offers services related to gas and emissions trading for its customers and Gasum Oy. The company’s turnover comprises trading and service fees and annual fees. Secondary market and Gasum Plussa trading take place using the Gas Physical Forward (GPF) mechanism. Trading takes place in the Gas Exchange online service, which is open around the clock every day of the year. In GPF physical deliveries of natural gas are traded in one-hour periods.Trading is possible for a minimum of one full hour and a maximum of 90 days before the delivery of the amount of gas traded. In 2010 GPF trading in the Gas Exchange totalled 4.0 TWh − triple the 2009 figure − and accounted for 8.9% of total natural gas consumption in Finland. The number of GPF transactions during the year was almost 129,000, which corresponds to an average of 353 executed transactions a day. Cz ec h G Fin 13
