SPRING • Sales of natural gas in April–June totalled 7.9 TWh, down 18% on the corresponding period in 2008. • Finland’s 11th natural gas vehicle (NGV) filling station was opened by Gasum in Porvoo. • Gasum gave a notice of its intent to appeal against the Market court’s decision regarding the interpretation of the reasonableness of natural gas pricing. • Gasum’s Natural Gas Fund gave out more than €70,000 in grants. SUMMER • Sales of natural gas in July–September totalled 7.6 TWh.The figure remained at a level lower than the year before due to cuts in industrial use and the low market price of electricity. • The new natural gas pipeline between Hämeenlinna and Lempäälä was taken into service. • The construction of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) production plant began in the Kilpilahti industrial area in Porvoo. • The refurbishment of the natural gas pipeline between Pajari and Kiehuva was completed, and the project was a major employer in the local area. • A new NGV filling station was opened in Helsinki.There were a total of around 500 NGVs in Finland, of which 100 were buses serving the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. AUTUMN • Sales of natural gas in October-December totalled 12.5 TWh. • Fortum’s new natural gas powered Suomenoja power plant became operational in Espoo. • The Regional Environment centre provided a favourable statement regarding the EIA report on the Mäntsälä-Siuntio pipeline project. • Two new filling stations were opened and the construction of another two new ones began − with the number of NGVs increasing at a nice rate. • In December extremely cold weather and the high price of electricity resulted in a major spike in the demand for natural gas, but Gasum was able to supply all the amounts of gas ordered. 5
