The underground pipeline network is an efficient and almost emission-free method of transporting fuel to customers. Natural gas combustion does not create ashes, which means there are no harmful emissions from the transport of combustion residue either. in the future the pipeline network constructed for the transmission of natural gas can also be employed for the transmission and distribution of biogas. When the emission impacts of energy solutions are compared, all emissions related to the fuel used, its production and the handling of combustion residues should be better taken into consideration. The energy efficiency of natural gas is particularly apparent in combined heat and power (CHP) production at combined cycle plants and heat production using condensing boilers. for natural gas transmissions to meet customers’ needs. Capacity is maintained and improved through measures including regular network maintenance, introduction of new areas into the network using new pipelines, and constructing parallel pipelines in the existing network area. increased cooperation and exchange of information with the gas supplier helps prevent supply disturbances. Risk of disturbances will be further reduced by the new natural gas reserve storage facility based on LNG technology. The construction of this facility and Gasum’s natural gas liquefaction plant will be completed in Porvoo in summer 2010. it is based on the OHsAs 18001:2007 Occupational Health and safety management system standard. Safety in the vicinity of natural gas pipelines Thousands of landowners come within the area affected by the natural gas transmission pipeline. Gasum gains usufruct rights to pipeline areas and ownership rights to valve and pressure reduction station properties. The pipeline imposes some restrictions on property use. in 2009, Gasum issued around 300 written permits and statements in respect of land use and construction work taking place in the immediate vicinity of the natural gas pipeline. Gasum also performs on-site supervision of construction work near the pipeline. GAsUm ADOPTED A CERTifiED sAfETY mANAGEmENT sYsTEm Gasum’s integrated management system is certified in accordance with the isO 9001:2000, isO 14001:2004 and OHsAs 18001:2007 standards. As well as the quality and environmental management system, Gasum’s system also includes a safety management system, which was certified as part of the system in 2009. ENERGY EffiCiENCY AND TECHNOLOGY COOPERATiON Gasum is a signatory to the finnish Chemical industry’s Responsible Care initiative and the finnish industrial energy savings agreement. Companies committed to the agreement system set objectives for the improvement of the NATURAL GAS DATA FOR 2009 • Highest volume in 24-hour consumption: 19.6 million m3 (on 15 December) • Undelivered energy compared to energy transmitted via the network: 0.002% • Planned service interruptions: 11 • Unplanned service interruptions within the transmission network: 3 Delivery reliability of natural gas is high Gasum owns the finnish natural gas transmission network and must make sure there is enough network capacity 27
