”A true pioneer,” is how the Gasum Employee of the Year 2009 was described by a jury consisting of ﬁve previous holders of the title and chaired by Tuulia Toivanen, Gasum Employee of the Year 2008. MISTER NATURAL GAS That is an apt name for customer Service Manager Arto Riikonen, Gasum Employee of the Year 2009, who received the recognition for his decades-long dedication and tireless effort as a promoter of natural gas. Arto Riikonen calls himself as an allround worker in the gas sector and has been involved in a lot during his forty-plus years in the business, first with Neste and since 1994 with Gasum. His duties have included the development of Gasum’s new business activities: gas as a transport fuel and liquefied natural gas (LNG). The most memorable moment in his career was designing the flame for the Olympic Torch used at the 1994 Winter Games in Lillehammer. Arto Riikonen’s knowledge of natural gas is in a league of its own. – It would have to be something really tricky before I threw in the towel, he says. He came across the field as a young and curious engineer by chance. – There was a position available and I went for it, he says. One of the lessons he has learned from the eventful decades in the natural gas business is that change is constant. – Reaching the goal always slips away from you. The only thing to do is roll up your sleeves again, he says. Riikonen is a popular lecturer who truly has a way with words. He teaches gas technology at institutions including the Lappeenranta University of Technology and the School of Science and Technology at Aalto University. Gasum gave Arto Riikonen the GAS 40 licence plate when he had served 40 years in the business. Developing the use of natural gas as a transport fuel has been one of his key duties. – Teaching keeps you alert as you have to stay sharp, he says. His employer also appreciates his contact with students. Readers are also familiar with his witty expert articles in his column in Gasum’s stakeholder magazine Gasetti and many other industry publications. Unhurried fishing trips from his holiday home in the countryside are only a little over a year away, but it is hard to image that he will totally leave the field of natural gas. Investments in wellbeing at work Gasum is involved in the Zero Accident forum of enterprises working actively towards the prevention of industrial accidents.The year 2009 saw 5 accidents at work within the Gasum Group. None of these were serious, but they all resulted in at least one day off work.The sick leave rate was 2.8% of total working hours. The aim of Gasum’s group-wide bonus scheme for 2009 was to draw employee attention to safety and energy efficiency. safety was measured by the number of accidents at work and energy efficiency by the usage rate of videoconferencing and the volume of internal communications on energy-efficiency issues. Gasum also improves employee wellbeing by supporting the use of physical activity services.Training needs are reviewed every year in development discussions. in 2009 every Gasum employee participated in an average of 5 training days. Gasum’s internal communications take place using tools such as the intranet.The year under review saw the introduction of a new technical platform for intranet content production. To improve the internal flow of information, video connections were utilised to launch joint morning info events for all units every other friday. 23
