It typically reaches a height of 12–20 metres and has a broad and rounded crown.The most important population of the European White Elm found in Finland is on the shores of Lake Vanajavesi. One of the southern route alternatives of the Hämeenlinna-Lempäälä pipeline could have destroyed a local population of the endangered European White Elm.The route selected avoided their habitats and did not touch upon the most valuable coastal meadows. THE GOvERNmENT GRANTED GAsUm THE ExPROPRiATiON PERmiT The Hämeenlinna–Lempäälä pipeline project was kicked off in practice when the Government approved of the project and granted Gasum the permit to proceed with the expropriation of land areas necessary. Agreements regarding the felling of trees along the route had already been entered into with landowners before the advance procedure for expropriation began, and an initial inspection was conducted with each of the 350 landowners along the route. CONsTRUCTiON bEGAN Construction work began with route clearance, blasting and construction of the temporary installation road. Work progressed along the route from north to south, and towards the end of the summer the first gas pipes made from steel were placed in the ditch. Needs related to the future usage of the land were taken into consideration in the construction methods employed.
