Rolls of nowovens manufactured by Lacell Oy in processes utilising natural gas end up as raw material used by Finnish, Russian, baltic and central European companies. forEst inDustry innovation proDuction poWErED By natural Gas Lacell is one of the bright spots in Finnish forest industry. A new player in the sector, Lacell constructed a new production facility in southeastern Finland and now employs dozens of paper industry professionals.The site selected for the plant in Kausala, Iitti, is near the natural gas network catchment area because the company’s founders saw several advantages to natural gas. – Natural gas is an excellent choice for our process because of its delivery and supply reliability. We also find it important that the fuel we use is low in emissions, says Lacell’s Managing Director Risto Tamminen. Lacell uses natural gas to heat the production facility and as a fuel for production dryers. – Our production process is highly energy-intensive because the material must dry very quickly. Therefore the fuel we use in the recirculation dryer system has to be gaseous. because it is clean, gas can be allowed in direct contact with the product. Lacell is the only Finnish manufacturer of airlaid nonwoven materials. Developed in Finland, airlaid technology enables the production of paper-like material from Finnish cellulose. cleanness is important because Lacell’s customers use the material to produce hygiene, wiping, table decoration, packaging, filtering and hospital products. ADVANTAGE IN A TRANSFORMING MARKET The demand for absorbent nonwovens is increasing in Scandinavia and particularly in Russia. Nonwovens are becoming more and more popular, especially in hygiene and health care products, and replacing traditional cotton and plastic-based products. Nonwovens stand out from their competitors as a more environmentally-friendly alternative. – The production of cotton and the frequent washing of cotton-based products is expensive and burdens the environment, and plastic products cannot be composted, while nonwovens can be composted or incinerated as energy waste. In Tamminen’s opinion natural gas is an excellent element in a process that has a focus on ecological factors. – Natural gas is one of the cleanest forms of energy. Due concern at the initial stage for environmental issues in both raw materials and production provides a competitive edge in the market. NATURAL GAS GIVEN A POSITIVE WELcOME bY LOcALS Gasum constructed an 11-km distribution pipeline for the Lacell production facility in Kausala. The connection was completed on schedule by the end of 2009 and the facility was inaugurated in early 2010.The pipeline runs across areas owned by around 20 private landowners, local government and the church. cooperation with landowners was smooth. Gasum agreed with all of them about pipeline routing and land usufructs. The new pipeline connection also brings other industrial facilities and homes in the Kausala area the opportunity to start using natural gas. 17
