Awareness of Gasum among the respondents was quite poor, but natural gas was regarded as efficient and biogas as a source of energy for the future. in 2010 Gasum intends to further improve its regional visibility through a variety of locally-targeted communications projects. increasing the electricity production capacity. The HmA will also see another significant natural gas solution in the coming years. vantaa Energy’s waste-to-energy plant concept was awarded the contract in the competitive bidding process for HmA waste management organised by the Helsinki metropolitan Area Council (today the Helsinki Region Environmental services Authority, HsY). Due for completion in 2014, the plant’s waste incineration power generation capacity will be boosted through the use of natural gas. HELsiNki mETROPOLiTAN AREA bELiEvEs iN NATURAL GAs The majority of Helsinki metropolitan Area (HmA) residents live in a property connected to district heat and around a half of the district heat production by HmA power companies is based on natural gas. District heat production in the area is mainly focused on combined heat and power (CHP) production plants, which also generate a considerable amount of electricity. in November 2009 fortum took into service a new natural gas fuelled power plant in suomenoja, Espoo. This raised the share of natural gas in Espoo’s district heat production to around 60% while also considerably Diverse use of natural gas As well as electricity and district heat produced with natural gas, residents in the HmA can also benefit from cleaner transport thanks to natural gas buses. There are currently around 100 natural gas fuelled buses serving the HmA on routes operated by companies including Helsingin bussiliikenne, Tammelundin liikenne and Nobina. Natural gas is also used in the area by several industrial facilities, such as the new Paulig coffee roastery in Helsinki and the Hansaprint printing facility in vantaa. The area also has the largest local natural gas distribution network in finland. Two new cooperation bodies, Helsinki Regional Transport Authority (HsL) and Helsinki Region Environmental services Authority (HsY), became operational on 1 January 2010. both of the organisations play a major role in the development of the opportunities to utilise biogas in particular in the HmA, where a commitment has been made to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and increase the use of renewable sources of energy under the Helsinki metropolitan Area Climate strategy. Helsinki energy company Helsingin Energia regards the utilisation of biobased synthetic natural gas as a future option for the vuosaari power plant. Logistics for this gaseous renewable fuel could be provided efficiently by using a pipeline in the same way as for natural gas. The implementation of this solution is, however, likely to take several years. CUsTOmERs PARTiCiPATiNG iN THE CREATiON Of THE NEW PRiCiNG sYsTEm Gasum’s new m2010 pricing system for the wholesale supply of natural gas was introduced at the beginning of 2010. Gasum was determined to include the customer perspective in the pricing system development work as early and efficiently as possible. When deciding on the composition of the customer working groups, efforts were made to ensure that the different sizes and types of gas customer were appropriately represented. The first meetings of the working groups were held in January and february 2008 and the final one in late 2009. Gasum presented the structure of the new pricing system in may 2009, and the m2010 was published in August.
