CUsTOmER RELATiONsHiPs EmPHAsis ON LOCAL NEEDs There are major geographical differences in the consumption of natural gas in finland. southeastern finland has used natural gas for more than 30 years, while areas such as parts of Western Uusimaa are about to have their first opportunity access it. CLimATE CHANGE As A LOCAL CHALLENGE municipal power companies are an important customer group for Gasum and account for around 45% of Gasum’s natural gas sales. They have undergone several restructurings due to municipal mergers and unbundling. in 2009 the number of finnish municipalities covered by the natural gas network and with access to natural gas utilisation totalled 41. The Association of finnish Local and Regional Authorities conducted a survey of municipal climate polices in 2009. The results showed that municipalities with access to the natural gas network have embarked on active development of their climate policies, with those including Lahti, Lappeenranta, Lohja, Riihimäki and the municipalities in the Helsinki metropolitan Area having already drawn up their climate strategies. in their strategies the municipalities focus on increases in the use of renewable fuels and reductions in carbon dioxide emissions from energy production.They also plan to continue investments in the development of district heat. Gasum seeks to actively inform municipal decision-makers about the increasingly diverse opportunities for the use of natural gas and its positive impacts on local air quality. Growth potential can also be seen in transport use and as an alternative fuel for businesses, housing companies and houses. municipalities also play an important role in the biogas business through their utilities including waste and water companies. for example, sludge from municipal water facilities can be used as raw material in biogas reactors that biovakka, partly owned by Gasum, is planning to build near the natural gas network.
