LiikETOimiNTA lnG marKEt on a maJor GroWtH patH The market for liquefied natural gas (LNG) has grown rapidly in recent years in Norway and sweden, and demand is also increasing in finland. factors behind this growth include oil price development and new applications for LNG, such use as a shipping fuel in the baltic sea. for example, the finnish infrastructure and construction service company Destia is planning the procurement of LNG-fuelled coastal ferries. in the liquefied form natural gas can also be marketed in areas not covered by the natural gas pipeline network. Uses of LNG include trial runs and testing of gas engines as well as use as a reserve fuel for natural and biogas. Hamworthy Gas systems commenced in January 2010. The investment totals around €18 million. Gasum aims to begin LNG production in the plant in summer 2010. Once operational, the plant will quadruple LNG production to an annual total of around 20,000 tonnes. The liquefied nitrogen needed in the liquefaction process will be procured from the AGA air gas plant located nearby. Gasum will also procure plant operation, monitoring, maintenance, servicing and repair services from AGA. Plant operational control will take place at AGA’s Harjavalta plant via a remote control system. LNG will be transported to customers on trucks. The first deliveries by Gasum’s two new trucks were made in february 2009. A product warehouse exceeding 2,000 cubic metres in volume will be constructed in conjunction with the Gasum production plant, which will increase LNG supply reliability. Gasum will also acquire a portable LNG vaporiser for reserve fuel applications. A natural gas liquefaction plant is being constructed in Kilpilahti, Porvoo. Each 36 m in length, these containers were transported from the Kilpilahti port to the Gasum site in February. GASUM MADE A cOMMITMENT FOR bALTIc SEA AcTION Gasum was among the organisations making a commitment to improve the state of the baltic Sea through the baltic Sea Action Group (bSAG) in 2009. Gasum is committed to developing the opportunities to use a clean fuel, LNG, as a waterborne transport fuel. In the initial stage the aim is to achieve the use of LNG as a fuel for coastal ferries, with a further aim to possibly launch its more extensive use in baltic Sea shipping. LNG is very suitable for use as a shipping fuel because its environmental emissions are considerably lower than those of other fuels such as light fuel oil. The adoption of natural gas as a shipping fuel is accelerated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulation requiring shipping fuels to be sulphur-free by 2015. The bSAG gathers concrete commitments from public authorities, enterprises and NGOs to conserve the baltic Sea. Some commitments have a direct impact on the state of the baltic Sea, while others provide an indirect contribution towards action to save the baltic Sea. Porvoo liquefaction plant construction underway To respond to demand, Gasum is building a natural gas liquefaction plant in the kilpilahti industrial area in Porvoo. Excavation work started and foundations were laid in 2009, and installation of equipment supplied by Norwegian 12
