bUsiNEss Exchange was down 20% on the year before, while the total volume of trading accounted for around 3.4% of finland’s total natural gas sales. ENERGY GAsEs in 2009 Gasum made a major move towards the development of the biogas business when it acquired a 20% minority shareholding in biovakka suomi Oy. biovakka’s business idea is to produce biogas and recycled nutrients from organic raw materials, such as manure produced at farms, wet sludge from the food industry and organic waste from retailers and municipalities, all of which are currently utilised at low rates. in cooperation with biovakka, Gasum aims to produce biogas for transport use in particular. The companies aim to introduce biogas production facilities in conjunction with Gasum’s natural gas transmission network to enable the transmission of biogas produced by them to customers using Gasum’s network. The year under review saw Gasum look into several operating models regarding biogas production. Alternatives explored included a reactor plant located within the natural gas network, injection of gas produced in conjunction with a wastewater purification plant and a facility constructed outside Gasum’s network that would also have a natural gas vehicle (NGv) filling station. Liqueﬁed natural gas gaining share Gasum began the construction of a natural gas liquefaction plant in the kilpilahti industrial area, Porvoo, in 2009. The new plant’s production capacity will be 20,000 tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) once operational in summer 2010. Also being constructed next to the plant are 2,000 m3 containers for LNG storage to ensure security of supply. Gasum has continued to look into opportunities to utilise LNG as a shipping fuel in response to the requirement set in the international maritime Organization (imO) agreement for sulphur-free and low-emission fuels in waterborne transport by 2015. General concern about the state of the baltic sea has also made shipping companies operating in the area interested in cleaner fuel alternatives. A particular application explored by Gasum is the possibility of introducing LNG as a fuel for coastal ferries. broadscale use of LNG as a fuel in the baltic sea would call for LNG filling facilities at several ports in the region. TRANsmissiON sERviCEs The natural gas network is developed on the basis of customer needs and natural gas consumption forecasts. Gasum is also obliged under the Natural Gas market Act to develop the natural gas network. There must be sufficient transmission capacity to cover short-term spikes in consumption too. in 2009 a total of 46 km of new pipeline was added to the Gasum network.
