Nordic electricity market expert answers the theme’s key issues. Towards a deep green future Green Business Officer anna Forsberg from Skanska analyses and envisions actions that need to be taken for a more sustainable living environment. Eeva Ahotupa Holger Staffansson how important is it in your business how energy is produced now and how it will be produced in the future? Our customers demand from us that we develop solutions that have low or no environmental impact. Hence, how energy is produced both today and in the future is crucial for Skanska. Our ambition is to become “deep green,” which means zero primary energy use. In the Nordic countries, we have an ambition to build 300–500 homes with zero primary energy use in 2015. in your business, can you envision a future in which all the energy needed can be produced with renewables? The technology is already here. If you follow pricing trends for solar panels, you realise that it will not be many years until they are competing with today’s electricity prices. For all energy to be renewable, we must be brave, think ahead and use today’s money wisely; that will enable us to be open to new alternative energy systems and sources in the future. as a building developer, we have to make the buildings future proof, i.e. we must prepare them for future solar installations, electric charging for electric cars, smart metering, billing to households etc. From your perspective, what are the most important actions that need to be taken to ensure a more sustainable living environment? Making the existing building stock more energy efficient is one of the major challenges and possibilities for a more sustainable living environment. another important action is making the transportation systems more energy efficient, e.g., by switching to electricity. a third vital action is to transform our grids to be smarter so that they can handle a large portion of small-scale electricity supply, reflect more variable prices and increased consumer interaction. Consumers need to be able to have a significant impact on their energy bills in order to realise the real value of energy. what are your thoughts about the Solar Economy in relation to sustainable urban living? In my opinion, it is necessary to move into Solar economy if we want to reach sustainable urban living. Various kinds of energy sources will be needed such as solar, bio fuels, geothermal and wind and they will all be part of Solar economy. However, resources are – and will become – a limiting factor; hence, general resource efficiency will be vital.
