Theme: Solar Economy. Fortum’s action plan. the fuel’s energy can be utilised. The national plans for the production of heating and cooling energy, presented by the eU, and the support for CHP production promote the right kind of development. Conventional thermal heat plants must be replaced with CHP plants, but the development must be market-based. For instance, it is not feasible to build a CHP plant for electricity production in an area where a sufficient amount of heat is already being produced. In that case, the CHP requirement would only increase costs without adding efficiency benefits. The coal dependency of new CHP plants must be minimised and coal should be replaced with local, bio-based fuels, which, in fact, are actively being developed. In addition to traditional wood fuels, bio-based fuels include, e.g., the wood-based, heavy oil-like pyrolysis oil and dried biomass, i.e. biocoal. TEChNoloGy dEVEloPmENT ViTally imPorTaNT To achieve the energy and climate targets, new technology and innovative solutions are needed. In fact, the development of energy technology should be made a key component of the eU’s research and innovation programme (Horizon 2020) currently in the works. In the current framework programme, only 3–4% of the total funding is allocated to the energy sector. Commercialisation of new technologies could be effectively advanced by, e.g., directing public procurements to grow the demand for and the testing and market entry of new product and service innovations. The public sector could collaborate more actively with the private sector to develop solutions for the challenges associated with energyefficient urban construction. In the long term, improving the competitiveness of companies operating in the eU area should be the main goals of the research and innovation programme. Research projects must be aligned with the current strategic energy technology plans and global market trends. It is important for companies – and thus for all of society – that the results from research and development projects also support future business. even though energy companies have traditionally been mainly adopters of technology, they must share in the responsibility for developing new and existing production technologies and other energy solutions, like smart grids. rEad morE What is Solar Economy?
